SHIFAN NECKLACE
$ 334.00
Copal, large vermeil spacers, carnelian and baroque fw pearls are strung on rubber for an edgy modern feel. The pendant is double-sided and each nook and crevice has a gemstone, pearl or Swarovski crystal tucked inside, including some rare, vintage gems. The clasp is a 14 carat gf toggle. There are also matching Shifan Earrings.
The name came out of a thirteenth century (Song Dynasty) Chinese portrait of a Zen master, Wuzhun Shifan, showing that unpredictable color combinations have created startling beauty throughout the ages. If we look at the detail of this painting, we are confronted with an astounding piece of modern art. And, we have to admit we like the play of words on chiffon--as this necklace is anything but frothy/frilly.
Recently, we revisited La Danse by Matisse at MOMA, a painting we have looked at dozens of times, and were struck by a number of subtle resemblances. The interlocked hands of the dancers remind us of the knots in our necklace, as do the related colors. The simultaneous moods of ritualistic solemnity and playfulness are present in both the painting and the jewelry; and the result in both cases is a bit of an aesthetic shock--the good kind, we hope.
